Amy Winehouse “Back to Black”

Released in 2006, this was the album the made Amy a superstar, however it was her debut release Frank that made me a convert. While I prefer Frank, I don’t have a single objection to the tracks here on Back to Black.

Rehab: She attempted to transform her personal struggle into a defiant, soulful anthem of vulnerability and resistance. Sadly, she lost this war.

“He said, “I just think you’re depressed”
“This me, yeah baby, and the rest”

You Know I’m No Good: I absolutely adore the honesty and see some of my younger self in this song, a smoky confession of temptation and flawed love. Fearless honesty, vulnerability, and emotional complexity.

“I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told you I was trouble
You know that I’m no good”

Me and Mr. Jones: This song was inspired by a missed concert, allegedly a Nas concert, she is not referring to the other rapper Slick Rick. I like it because here is a genuine talent showing mad love for another talent.

“Mr. Destiny, nine and 14
Nobody stands in between me and my man
‘Cause it’s me, me and Mr. Jones”

Just Friends: A story of two individuals in a friendship likely with some benefits that could go further but shouldn’t. A song of sexual longing and tension.

“I…I wanna touch you, but that just hurts.”

Back to Black: The “black” of the title symbolizes both depression and emotional emptiness that follows the end of a relationship. It was inspired by her breakup with Blake Fielder-Civil, who returned to a former girlfriend after he and Amy separated. Anyone that has lost out in a relationship knows that initial feelings afterwards

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black.

Love is a Losing Game: Rather than pleading for reconciliation or lashing out, here is a song with a weary conclusion, sometimes love simply doesn’t end in victory, no matter how much you care.

Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now, the final frame
Love is a losing game

Tears Dry on Their Own: For me the beauty of this is song is the simple but heavy idea that love ends and life keeps moving whether you’re ready or not.

“He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day
But I’m grown
And in your way
In this blue shade
My tears dry on their own”

Wake Up Alone: I think “Wake Up Alone” is one of the most emotionally exposed moments on Back to Black. To me, it doesn’t feel like a crafted pop story so much as a mind talking to itself when it can’t shut off.

“That silent sense of content
That everyone gets
Just disappears soon as the sun sets”

Some Unholy War: For me this song functions as a clear expression of loyalty under pressure. The relationship is surrounded by conflict and instability. She’s not only talking about love, she’s talking about standing beside someone when everything looks unstable.

He still stands in spite of what his scars say
And I’ll battle ’til this bitter finale
Just me, my dignity and this guitar case

He Can Only Hold Her: Instead of being inside a breakup or the longing, Amy narrates a relationship from a distance outside the drama. There’s an emotional mismatch at the center of it, two people physically close but not aligned in what they need from each other.

“Now how can he have her heart
When it got stole
So he tries to pacify her
‘Cause what’s inside her never dies”

I love how you can hear Lauryn Hill’s influence on Amy. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill regularly played in the background while I wrote my dissertation.

Addicted: Rather than ending with despair, Amy leaves with wit and a reminder that even lighter moments can reveal truths about relationships.
