Newsom’s handling of the California homelessness crisis emerges as ‘stress test’ of Obama legacy

I was recently cited in a national political analysis published by Washington Examiner examining how Gavin Newsom’s response to homelessness may shape broader debates connected to the governing legacy of President Barack Obama.

My contribution with the reporter Barnini Chakraborty focused on geography and material insecurity’s role in shaping political legitimacy.

I noted that the appearance of affluent coastal liberalism does not always translate seamlessly across regional and demographic boundaries, particularly during periods marked by inflation shocks, technological disruption, and declining institutional trust.

In moments like these, voters often prioritize material security alongside, or even ahead of symbolic political alignment.
