This past summer as I noted in an earlier post, I had the privilege of leading a study abroad program with Maryville University of Saint Louis and Maryville University Online Our location was Oxford, England where we explored the rich sociological surroundings of local pubs. Our time in Oxford was insightful, as we visited nearly 20 pubs in 24 days.
My reflections on this experience have been featured in the Winter 2024-2025 edition of The Oxford Drinker, where I delve deeper into my sociological insights gained from this experience. This project reaffirmed a simple truth: third spaces foster inclusivity, connection, and belonging that are vital in a world that feels increasingly fragmented.
You can read my full piece on page 28, “Sociology in a Pint Glass”, on the Oxford Drinker’s website. Or if you’re in England you can pick up a free copy in any local Oxford pub. Cheers to preserving these community treasures!
