Capturing Tranquility: Photographic Chronicles of Kansas

On the Kansas Missouri border there lies a space that has become a retreat over the years. These multiple journeys to my mother-in-law’s have not only provided a respite from the hustle of work and family obligations, but have also served as an ongoing photographic odyssey.

With each visit, I’ve witnessed the dance of seasons. There is a choreography to the change in hues. My lens becomes a storyteller documenting the ever-changing nature that surrounds her house.

The play of nature and working class living provides imagery that is a constant fascination during my visits.

As an abstract painter, these photographic excursions influence my painting endeavors by adding to my subconscious color palette. I am particularly moved by trying to capture the random beauty of a Kansas storm. Their sheer power never ceases to amaze me.

I especially like to capture the way the light plays on the branches of my mother-in-law trees in both her front and back yards.

Beyond the aesthetics these photographic forays have offered me, they also give me moments of introspection. The serenity and simplicity of this small place on earth stands as a stark contrast to the busy moments of work life living. Alas, it is always time to jump on I-70 and cross Missouri on our wayward home.
