Memphis, Tennessee

We decided to drive down and stop for a couple days in Memphis Tennessee to introduce our daughter to the Civil Rights Museum.

As I have written in other areas, my daughter was the impetus for this stop. She is a passionate soul and unbeknownst to her my photographic muse.

I think Memphis is a wonderfully photogenic city. As an outsider, at least the city appears to be trying hard to bring back traffic beyond Beale Street.

I appreciate attempts to consider the aesthetic of local architecture and maintain it for as long as there is support. I think our culture loses something by not attempting to make use of our bygone built environment. It grounds us in time and place, putting life in context.

My daughter doesn’t really have memory of Elvis as a cultural icon. For this reason, I chose not to take her to Graceland. I did however show her Sun Studio and inform her of her proximity to Rock’nRoll’s existence. And yes, I have been to Graceland myself.
