“The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s ok I know nothing’s wrong… nothing”
I was probably first introduced to David Byrne when I was in the 9th grade. It was the Talking Heads video “Once in a Lifetime” on MTV. I loved the absurdity of the video, but I never really took to the Talking Heads then. My musical soundtrack in those days was fueled by a rush of testosterone not intellectual exploration. I would develop my interest in intellectual explorations once I figured out how to control the testosterone and let other aspects of my body contribute to the internal dialogue equally.
I have over the years regretted that it took me this long to appreciate the brilliance of that band The Talking Heads and just as much Mr. David Byrne. But, I did come to appreciate both eventually some time ago.
I find myself returning to them again because of Mr. Byrne in particular. I so admire him from afar at this moment because of how he is carrying himself and continuing to craft his art at the age of 68. I am not that close in age to Mr. Byrne, but in my mind I am still the young mind seeking new expressions without limits. There is no expiration point for that mindset. Our culture sometimes suggests so, but not Mr. Byrne. Unlike his musical peers, he is not revisiting BUT reimagining. I find him an absolutely fascinating artist, particular at this moment in his career.
I felt the need to share this as a way to put something positive out there in a bleak approaching COVID winter in the United States.
